MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Top Tennessee Republicans — including the state’s house speaker — said Monday that they’re “taking action” against Memphis lawmakers who have proposed more gun restrictions within the city and Shelby County.
This comes after Memphis City Council voted last month to allow voters to decide in November whether they want stricter gun control. As it stands, Tennessee is a permit-less carry state.
In a joint statement, Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton threatened to make a new state law that would withhold sales tax revenue if Memphis and Shelby County leaders “circumvent state law by politicized ballot measures or ordinances.”
