Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will not run for re-election, the longtime Senator announced Thursday.

McConnellhasservedintheSenatefordecades,includingasSenatemajorityleaderunderPresidentDonaldTrump’sfirstadministration.McConnellisthelongest-servingSenatepartyleaderinU.S.history,andheannouncedhisretirementonhis83rdbirthday. “Seventimes,myfellowKentuckianshavesentmetotheSenate,”McConnellsaidinpreparedremarkstotheSenatefloor.“Everydayinbetween,I’vebeenhumbledbythetrustthey’veplacedinmetodotheirbusinesshere.Representingourcommonwealthhasbeenthehonorofalifetime.Iwillnotseekthishonoraneighthtime.MycurrenttermintheSenatewillbemylast.” McConnellwasfirstelectedin1984,andheplanstoserveouttherestofhistermendinginJanuary2027.
