What does it mean to be a Second Amendment sanctuary city?

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ) – Since former Governor Ralph Northam enacted significant gun control legislation in 2019, Virginia has witnessed a dramatic response from its municipalities.
Hundreds of counties and cities throughout the commonwealth have taken a bold political stance by declaring themselves “Second Amendment sanctuaries.”
But what does this designation actually mean? Sanctuary status means municipalities pledge not to devote their resources toward enforcing state gun control measures. It’s a form of local resistance to what sanctuary advocates view as state overreach.
Lynchburg joined this movement in 2023 when the city council voted to become a Second Amendment sanctuary city. Councilman Marty Misjuns, a vocal supporter of the measure, frames the decision as a principled stand against what he sees as unconstitutional government action.
