The Justice Department just said the federal ban on licensed handgun sales to 18-to-20-year-olds is unconstitutional and cannot be criminally enforced.
The next day, Governor Kathy Hochul posted:
“Not in New York.”
Then came the word doing all the work:
“Teenager.”
That word choice matters.
Because technically, yes, nineteen ends in “teen.”
But the honest version of the sentence is:
No adult under twenty-one should be able to walk into a gun store and buy a handgun.
That sounds very different.
In New York, an 18-, 19-, or 20-year-old can be treated like an adult when the state wants to punish him, and a voter when politicians want his vote.
But when he wants to legally buy a handgun from a licensed dealer after a background check, suddenly he becomes a “teenager.”
That is the inconsistency.
The DOJ opinion only applies to the federal law. It does not automatically erase New York’s state law, and New York still has its own pistol-license rules.
So Hochul saying “Not in New York” is not really a legal response to what DOJ did.
It is a political flex.
