California has regulated guns so hard that now it is regulating everything around the gun.
Including the 3D printer sitting on your desk.
Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new gun-control package, and one of the bills targets consumer 3D printers sold in California by requiring firearm-blocking technology.
In plain English, California wants your printer to look at what you are printing and decide whether it is a gun part.
A barrel?
A tube?
A bracket?
A part for something completely unrelated?
The printer is supposed to know.
But here is where it gets even more absurd: the mandate depends on an outside standards body writing the standard. If that standard does not exist by 2029, California DOJ eventually gets to stop checking.
So Newsom signed a law for software that may not even exist yet.
And of course, there is a hall pass.
The bill has an entertainment-industry carveout, which means the only printers California trusts to make gun-shaped objects belong to the town that makes billion-dollar movies about shooting people.
