A Minneapolis political influencer asked Republicans a question:
“If it’s not the guns, then what’s your plan?”
Fair question.
But when I started looking at the numbers, the existing laws, and the proposals already introduced in Minnesota, the story became a lot more complicated.
Andrew Reynolds points to thousands of firearm deaths among children and demands to know what Republicans have done to prevent them.
So I looked.
CDC data analyzed by KFF shows that firearm deaths among children and teenagers involve very different circumstances, including homicide, suicide, and accidental shootings.
Those differences matter when you’re trying to prevent them.
And after the tragic Annunciation school shooting, Minnesota lawmakers proposed competing approaches, including firearm restrictions, school security funding, and mental health resources.
Minnesota had already passed expanded background-check requirements and a red flag law in 2023.
So what happened when the shooting still occurred?

Because asking for solutions is easy.
The harder question is whether you’re willing to consider solutions that don’t involve banning another gun.
