During his time as a Senator for Texas, Ted Cruz has routinely backed the Second Amendment and fought against gun control bills.
As mid-term elections fire up this year, eyes will be on how Senator Cruz will handle the current gun control debate in America.
With the tragedy occurring at Parkland Florida, some lawmakers have been in a scramble to add new gun control bills. Some of those bills are extreme, some block rights to the second amendment and are trying to “update” existing laws. In the case of the Cornyn-Murphy bill, Cruz may have a hard time appealing to his entire base.
According to NBCNews, the Cornyn-Murphy bill:
“Would force greater participation in the National Instant Criminal Background Checks System (NICS) to ensure that all information is up-to-date.”
The bill essentially encourages states to upload all offenses into a database that can be referenced in background checks. States that would comply with the bill could see financial benefits in doing so. The NRA reportedly has supported the bill in the past. Currently the bill isn’t on the senate floor and Senator Cruz still isn’t backing it. Senator Cruz currently:
“agrees that we need to find solutions to prevent further mass shootings and he believes it can be done without stripping law-abiding citizens of their constitutional liberties.”
It will be worth watching what stance Senator Cruz takes as the mid term elections creep closer.
