AR-15 Saves Young Girl From Alligator

Anti-gunners and their accomplices in the media would have us believe that there is no reason to own an AR-15 rifle.

But Jordan Broderick, 15 years old, of Lake County, Florida would argue otherwise.

While canoeing in a state park, she was pursued and eventually trapped in a tree by an 11 foot long alligator.  Jordan’s father called 9-1-1 and a Lake County sheriff deputy killed the alligator with his AR-15.

From the Sun Sentinel:

Just after 3 p.m. Friday, the Sheriff’s Office received calls from Michael Henderson of Titusville and other family members, saying that his daughter couldn’t come down from a tree near a boat ramp because a 10-foot alligator sat at the base of the tree hissing at her for more than 30 minutes, the report said.

“My daughter’s stuck in a frickin’ tree and there’s gators surrounding her!” the teenager’s mother said frantically to a 911 operator. “Oh my God! Please hurry! Please hurry!”

Jordan was floating on a raft in the creek near Forest Service Road near Alexander Springs park in the Ocala National Forest, 55 miles north of downtown Orlando, when the alligator quickly approached her, authorities said.

That’s when the girl grabbed a large branch hanging over the water and climbed into the tree, according to the report. The alligator then waited in the water at the base of the tree underneath the girl hanging from the branch.

When Deputy Mitch Blackmon arrived, he found the girl in the tree screaming that she was tired from hanging on to the branch, the report said.

“My presence failed to scare the alligator away, and it began encroaching on my area at which time I fired one single 223 round from my Bushmaster AR15 killing the alligator,” Blackmon wrote in his report.

The alligator sank into the water and did not reappear, the report said. A Lake County marine biologist confirmed the alligator had died, according to authorities.

  1. Thanks for the officer with the AR15 killing the Gator. Actually there should be a control on all gators greater than four foot long. All Gators are a threat to humans, dogs, cats, children, chickens, domestic birds and other wildlife like ducks and cranes and they should be killed when they are over four foot long.

  2. If you think for one minute, this situation changes my mind about the lives that are taken by people owning AR-15s, you are badly mistaken! AR-15s belong in the military, not in the hands of civilians. But, I will just sit back and watch gun owners kill each other! They deserve it!! Unfortunately, it is very sad when a none gun owner gets in the way!! But I’ll continue to say….. kill each other!!

  3. Alligators are extremely dangerous and should be avoided. However if you happen to live on lake front property always have a gun handy and if they come too close, shoot around the temple area. That would hurt or kill and they either die or not show up anymore.

  4. Dumbest article EVER. One shot from any long gun would have done the job in the hands of a competent shooter (which Blackmon obviously is). And in any event, that’s what, over a thousand young people versus one alligator? Woop woop.
