The recent gun laws that were rammed through the legislature and hastily signed in by Florida Gov. Rick Scott are already having Constitutional repercussions. Under the auspicious of the new law, the first guns have been confiscated from a Florida citizen.
The highly controversial laws which are currently under suit from the NRA were used to justify the confiscation of firearms from a man in Broward county.
The Orlando Sentinel reported:
“Four firearms and 267 rounds of ammunition were ordered removed from a 56-year-old Lighthouse Point man who was determined to be a potential risk to himself or others.”
“The man is also prohibited from trying to purchase or obtain guns or ammunition from any source.”
While the new laws are meant to “protect the public”, they clearly violate the Second Amendment to the Constitution by moving the gun age to 21. They are a very slippery slope as no groundwork or guidelines are set into what determines someone to be a risk to others or themselves.
This opens the door to persecution of gun owners by anti-gun officials and potentially have a stigmatizing effect on those might actually seek medical help for potential mental illness.
