A very serious and unfortunate event occurred over the last week. A 19-year-old man from Maryland threatened violence against two Democratic Senators over their gun control stances.
There is no denying that the gun debate creates a great deal of passion, and strongly held views from both sides, but that should never lead to threatening someone’s life.
“A 19-year-old Maryland man has been indicted on charges that he threatened to kill two high-profile liberal senators – Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Kamala Harris of California – and to injure marchers at a gun control rally in Washington earlier this year.
“Senator, I would watch your back as you’re out today,” read an Instagram message to Mr Sanders’ office. You wouldn’t want to be caught off guard when I use my second amendment protected firearm to rid the world of you, you stupid, crazy old fool.”
The teen also sent a message directed to Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA). There is no excuse to ever threaten someone’s life. Outbursts like these are disgusting and vile and certainly are not the way to win the gun control debate.
While 2nd Amendment supporters may have vastly different views from anti-gun crusaders there is never a reason to resort to threats or violence.
If you want to make a difference in the gun debate it’s wise to follow local and state elections. Aligning your vote with a candidate that supports the 2nd Amendment can go a long way toward winning the public policy debate over gun rights.
