U.S.DistrictJudgeMargoBrodieinNewYorkwrotethatshewas“notlikelytograntfinalapproval”ofthetwocorporations’settlement,whichwasannouncedinMarch.Asaresult,shedeniedthecompanies’requestforpreliminaryapproval.Thejudgehasnotyetissuedawrittenruling.
ThejudgethendirectedthecreditcardcompaniesandotherpartiestosubmitproposedredactionsbeforeJune28andexplainwhy.
InMarch,thetwocompaniessaidtheiragreementwouldlowerfees,knownasinterchangefees,thatamerchantmustpaywhenacustomerusesoneoftheircards.
AnumberoftradeandmerchantgroupshadopposedtheVisa–Mastercardagreement,arguingthatthecard-usefeeswouldstillbetoohighandthatthetwocorporationswouldretaintoomuchco
