Police say a two-year-old boy in suburban Detroit accidentally shot himself in the stomach with one of his babysitter’s firearms on Saturday.
Officers with the Warren Police Department (WPD) responded to a call at around 6 p.m., finding the wounded toddler, according to a press release.
The incident occurred at the home of the toddler’s 42-year-old babysitter who possessed two handguns, the WPD says. The authorities allege that the firearms were left “unsecured in an area accessible to the child.” (RELATED: ‘It Went Off By Mistake’: Family Reacts To Livestreamed Shooting That Killed 12-Year-Old, 14-Year-Old)
“Investigators will be examining the details surrounding the safe and secure storage of the handgun as part of their investigation,” the WPD writes. At this stage, police do not suspect more significant foul play.
Shortly after police arrived at the scene, the child was transported to a local hospital and is currently listed in stable condition, the press release notes.
