Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada has called for stricter gun control in the wake of the deadly shooting that took place in Côte-des-Neiges on Monday. The SPVM described the weapon used by the shooter as a long-range firearm.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Martinez Ferrada stated that rules regarding gun ownership need to be addressed, adding that “weapons have no place here.”
“We can’t live in a country, city or community where you’re at risk of dying from a gun. What’s concerning is how — even today, in 2026 — someone can manage to get a gun, go into a public street and open fire.”
Three people were killed in Monday’s shooting, including 34-year-old police officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 68-year-old civilian Michel Moshe Mizrahi, and the shooter, who has been identified as Seth Scott Hatfield, 25, from Lethbridge, Alberta.
