Why Democrats Really Fear Guns

Years ago, a friend told me something I’ve never been able to unhear: most people who are scared of firearms are not really afraid of the gun itself.
But when you live your whole life believing your safety is someone else’s job, the gun does not look like freedom.

Jesse Lee Peterson was asked why Democrats are afraid of guns, and his answer was simple:

Beta.

And yes, it’s funny.

But I think the real answer goes deeper than that.

Years ago, a friend told me something I’ve never been able to unhear: most people who are scared of firearms are not really afraid of the gun itself. They are afraid because they have never once pictured themselves as the defender of their own life.

That explains a lot.

In America, a lot of people have quietly outsourced their own safety.

They assume the police will handle it.

The government will handle it.

Somebody else will show up.

Somebody else will protect them.

Somebody else will step in when things get dangerous.

But when you live your whole life believing your safety is someone else’s job, the gun does not look like freedom. It looks scary. It looks ugly. It looks unnecessary.

Because you cannot picture your own hand on it.

That is the mindset behind a lot of gun control.

It is not just fear of the tool.

It is fear of the responsibility that comes with the tool.

And to be fair, guns should come with a certain amount of fear — the healthy kind. The respectful kind. A firearm has finality. Once the trigger is pulled, you cannot take the round back. That deserves respect.

But that is not the fear driving gun control.

The fear driving gun control is the kind where someone takes their own anxiety, their own weakness, their own inability to imagine defending themselves, and then turns it into a law that limits everybody else.

I can’t see myself defending my life, so you shouldn’t be able to defend yours either.

That’s the move.

And that is where I draw the line.

Your fear should not become my legislation.

A five-foot grandmother and a 250-pound attacker are not physically equal.

But the second she is armed, the equation changes.

That is the whole point of the firearm.

That is why it is the greatest equalizer ever created.

The real reason some people fear guns is not the noise, the recoil, or the metal.

It is the idea that you do not need them to save you.
