Malcolm Gladwell says the Second Amendment was written to keep slave patrols armed.
And the key to his argument?
**The grammar of a single sentence.**
During an appearance on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Gladwell discussed his book *The American Way of Killing* and offered a controversial interpretation of why the Founders protected the right to keep and bear arms.
Now, let’s acknowledge something important.
Militias and slave patrols were connected in parts of the American South. That history is real, documented, and deserves to be discussed.
But does that mean protecting slave patrols was the purpose of the entire Second Amendment?
That’s where the historical record gets interesting.
In this video, I examine Gladwell’s argument alongside James Madison’s original 1789 draft, founding-era state declarations, the Articles of Confederation, George Washington’s writings, and the Supreme Court’s interpretation in *District of Columbia v. Heller*.
We also explore the history of laws that restricted Black Americans from possessing firearms.
Because understanding the Second Amendment means confronting all of American history, including slavery, individual liberty, and the Founders’ fear of standing armies.
**Was the Second Amendment primarily about protecting slavery, resisting government tyranny, or something more complicated?**
Let’s examine the evidence.
